Cartography with ArcGIS
Overview of course
This course uses a combination of conceptual lessons emphasising the basic principles of cartographic design along with lessons on how to apply these principles using the cartographic and geoprocessing tools available in ArcGIS Desktop to create outstanding maps. Participants will examine factors that control and influence cartographic design; learn techniques for best displaying vector and raster data; and create maps that communicate information effectively. This course is for those with limited formal cartography education who want to produce high-quality map products in ArcGIS Desktop. This course is for those who want to produce high quality map products in ArcMap.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand fundamental cartographic design principles
- Understand how symbols and colors affect map interpretation
- Learn how to critique maps
- Work with the Style Manager and create custom symbols
- Apply classification schemes for displaying data
- Work with the Standard and Maplex Label Engines in conjunction with the Label manager
- Explore the label placement options to improve name searches in maps
- Create map annotation groups and annotation feature classes
- Use generalisation tools to improve readability of map features
- Create balanced and informative layouts
- Explore advanced layout techniques
- Explore options for printing and publishing maps
Prerequisites
Completion of Introduction to ArcGIS I or equivalent experience is required. Programming knowledge is not necessary. Participants are encouraged to bring their own maps for use in class discussions.

This course is designed for experienced ArcGIS users who want to produce high-quality map products.
