Q. Are there any free GIS options available to try?
A. Yes. Go to ESRI's Education Community to get started. You will be able to find out more information on GIS, careers in GIS, look a blogs and forums, as well as download the free software. Look under the Software tab and download AEJEE (ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education) or ArcGIS Explorer. Both are excellent starting points. AEJEE is a 'lightweght' version of ArcView and it comes with data and an excellent tutorial document while ArcGIS Explorer has a 3D feel similar to other online data viewers although you can overlay your own GIS data as well.

Q. How do I arrange professional development?
A. We list all of our scheduled training in the Training section of the website, here. If you are after something specifically for your school or staff, contact us at schools@esriaustralia.com.au and we will try and arrange a suitable date for a session. We offer professional development on a per day basis.

Q. Where do I get data?
A. Data can be found all over the place. The internet is a reasonable resource to get started. Look at the Geoscience Australia website as well as the Geography Network. You really need to speak to a local authority for data at a local scale. Ask your local council for advice but make sure you let them know you are using ArcGIS 9 so they can provide you with data in the right format. Also look at state government departments for data.

Q. What are the system requirements for ArcGIS 9?
A. Go here to enter your network details and find out your system requirements for running ArcGIS 9.

Q. What GIS options are there for Mac users?
A. Mac users should begin by downloading the AEJEE application from the ESRI Education Community website. AEJEE is Java based and will work on Mac applications. Mac users will be able to run ArcGIS 9 provided they install and run the software on the Windows platform using parallel operating system software.

Q. What do I actually install?
A. There are lots of disks but schools will only need one or two. Get your IT staff to install ArcView. You will not need extensions (unless you have purchased a licence for one) and you will not need the Python application. Your installation is complete when you are able to access ArcMap, ArcCatalog and the Desktop Administrator if you navigate through the Start Menu-->All Programs-->ArcGIS.
